Sun and sand

When I first came to Savannah to interview for a position at SCAD, I arranged to stay a few extra days, rented a car, and drove out to Tybee. The beauty of the historic district, with its cobblestone streets and canopy of live oaks, was a bit like a story book. But it was sitting on the sand at Tybee that I first thought, “Yup. I could live here.”

Eight years later, I still marvel at my luck living in this incredible city, a stone’s throw from the beach . . . This evening we packed a picnic and headed to the beach with friends for the SCAD Sand Arts Festival. Fletcher and his buddy Aidan hit the waves immediately. Lola Gray took a bit longer to warm up (ok – she started out screaming bloody murder that she was frightened of the crabs) but before long she was playing in the sand with Abby and AnMei. Next thing we knew she was fully in the surf jumping waves with Chad!

We ran into more friends on the beach and played well past bedtime. The kids ate tomato and apple sandwiches in the car on the way home, sandy, tired, smelling of the sea and full of plans for the next beach picnic.

Mother’s Day Tea

Today there was a Mother’s Day Tea at Fletcher’s school. He told me he was going to give me gifts that would fill my heart with love – and he was correct. But more than the gifts, my heart was full to the point of exploding with how happy Fletcher was to see me when I got to his school. He jumped up and down and shouted to everyone on the playground “My Mommy is here! My Mommy is here!” He held my hand and gave me a hundred kisses and served me extra cookies at tea. What I have done to deserve love like this I do not know. But I am so, so happy for it. What a lucky Mommy I am!
